As the co-founder and leader of the Global Pioneer Society (GPS), he has created a welcoming platform for cultural exchange, friendship, and mutual support. In addition to his leadership role, Flavio served as a Summer Residential Assistant, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for on-campus students. His story encourages students from all backgrounds to thrive, connect, and make a meaningful impact.

Momo — JapanGraphic Design · GPS Social Chair · Cubayan board member
Momo Hayasaka is a sophomore majoring in Graphic Design. As Social Chairman on the GPS e-board and a board member of Cubayan, she plays a key role in planning events that celebrate international cultures. One highlight was the very first fall event after GPS's relaunch — Momo designed everything, from the GPS logo and social-media flyers to the presentation slides. Over 30 students attended, marking a strong start for the club. She appreciates Carroll's intimate class sizes, which foster strong connections and allow professors to offer personalized attention — making it easier to ask questions and go deeper into each subject.

Dining services occasionally offer international cuisine tastings, and Chartwells can accommodate special meal requests when you provide a recipe. Momo even organized a catered tasting session for her GPS event.
Linh Mai Nhat Nguyen — VietnamB.S. Chemistry (Pre-Health) · Pioneer Scholar · Tri-Beta Research Grant recipient
Linh earned her B.S. in Chemistry at Carroll, where as a Pioneer Scholar and Tri-Beta Research Grant recipient she began independent research that sparked her career in chemical ecology. She presented at the Southeast Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation and the International Society of Chemical Ecology conferences, earning Best Talk and Best Poster awards. Today, Linh is a Ph.D. researcher at iDiv and Friedrich Schiller University Jena, studying the evolution of fruit scent in Madagascar's figs — integrating ecological, chemical, and genomic tools to investigate how seed dispersal by lemurs has driven fig chemistry evolution.

Ansuya — NepalComputer Science & Mathematics · VP, Global Pioneer Society · OCC Fellow · International Orientation Mentor
Ansuya Shrestha is a sophomore majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics. As VP of the Global Pioneer Society, a Fellow at the Office of Community Culture, and an International Orientation Mentor, she supports both Nepalese and other international students adjusting to Carroll life. One of her most memorable experiences was organizing the Cultural Karaoke Night — creating an inclusive space where students shared songs from their home countries. Her involvement in homecoming celebrations and alumni engagement at the Betty Lou Tikalsky International House has further developed her leadership and communication skills.

Marti Solanellas Vilella has made his mark both on and off the field. As a dedicated member of the soccer team and a rising leader set to captain his team for the second consecutive season, his journey reflects the warmth of the Carroll community. When he arrived as a freshman, upperclassmen reached out to make him feel included — especially among international players adjusting to a new culture. One standout moment was his participation in the soccer team's coach hiring process. Selected as one of two players on the hiring panel, he helped choose a coach who would benefit the team and gained a unique behind-the-scenes look at an interview process. His advice: be curious, ask questions, get out of your dorm, and engage with everyone around you.

Victoria — SpainEnglish & Writing · Minors in Film/TV, Professional Writing & Creative Writing · Orientation Mentor · Spanish Tutor
Victoria Asuar Aznárez is a senior majoring in English and Writing. She serves as an Orientation Mentor for first-year students and works as a Spanish Conversation Tutor, connecting with many students while building real professional skills. Victoria is also active with Habitat for Humanity — every Spring Break, the group travels to a different location to volunteer. Last year it was Amarillo, Texas; this year she is organizing the trip to Berkeley County, South Carolina. One of her proudest moments was completing her Capstone project, a senior thesis on language and linguistic manipulation as a means of control, presented at a faculty conference. She is now working toward publishing her paper in an undergraduate magazine. What Victoria loves most about Carroll is that the small campus means faculty and staff know students by name — and that support is constant and genuine.

Lucia Mataix Diaz is a junior studying Biochemistry. Although she hasn't joined a club yet — she's considering the Chem Club — she actively works in student activities, which puts her at the center of many campus events. Lucia recalls the excitement of attending basketball games and working Carroll's Got Talent, events that captured the supportive and energetic vibe on campus. What she loves most is the genuine support from teachers and peers. As an international student, she found comfort in close connections with fellow internationals and the caring guidance of professors and classmates. Her advice: the first year might be challenging, but the friends you make will help you through it.

Hermione Huo graduated in 2020 with a double major in Psychology and Graphic Communication. As an International Orientation Mentor and Career Fellow at the Career Center, she supported new students and organized career fairs as President of Carroll's Psi Chi Psychology Honor Society. One memorable moment was just before the semester began when, after intensive training, she and her team welcomed a large group of new students. Guiding them through campus and celebrating small victories together forged lasting bonds. She appreciated the genuine sense of community — small classes, friendly staff, and supportive services helped her thrive both academically and personally.

Daniela — PeruApplied Physics · Dual degree with UW Milwaukee
Daniela majored in Applied Physics before continuing on to UW Milwaukee for her Engineering degree through Carroll's dual degree program. From Peru — a country celebrated for its rich multicultural heritage — she values the diversity and vibrancy that both her home and Carroll offer. Initially drawn to a larger city university, Daniela soon realized that Carroll's smaller community meant genuine connections and a warm, family-like atmosphere where staff and peers readily extend support. Choosing Carroll was an easy decision once she discovered the dual degree program — the perfect fit for her ambitious goals. Her favorite study spots: the sunlit second floor of Jaharis during the day, and the 24/7 Tech Center in Hilger LL for late-night sessions.
